Taking Measurements

March 2011  |

Every so often I like to rearrange the furniture in my house to get a different perspective on things.  To ensure the comfort and satisfaction of your guests, here are a few tips for placing furniture the appropriate distance apart.

Walkways:  When rearranging your furniture, try to leave a minimum of 2.5 feet for walkways.

Coffee Table to Sofa:  Coffee tables should be located 14-18 inches from a sofa to provide sufficient leg room, but still close enough for accessibility.

Dining Tables:  In a dining room, make sure there’s a least 48 inches between each edge of the table to the nearest wall or piece of furniture for passing traffic.

Chairs:  Chairs should be no more than 8 feet apart to facilitate conversation.
