Sales healthy despite mixed traffic

LAS VEGAS — Exhibitors at the summer market here reported flat to excellent traffic and, for the most part, were pleased with business despite withering 100-degree heat that may have kept some dealers away.

And despite retailer concerns going into market that product introductions would be light, exhibitors appeared to have plenty new to offer.

“We were slammed Sunday, Monday and we’re very busy (Tuesday),” said Mike Cohen, vice president of sales at Coaster.

“We know a lot of the East Coast retailers and some from the central region didn’t come,” he said, adding that some smaller retailers probably decided they could afford to sit out this market. “However, we had nice surprises with some majors that came in that hadn’t been in before.”

And the heavy traffic translated into good order writing, Cohen said, noting that roughly 60% of the showroom was new product and it got buyers’ attention.

The company introduced more exclusive Coaster-designed goods than ever before, including a well-received European contemporary-style bedroom with tongue-and-groove exterior design elements. The bed, dresser, mirror and nightstand can retail for $1,499 direct ship.
